Travellers Attacked On Ife-Akure Highway, One Raped

Some travellers on the Ife-Akure expressway were attacked by some dare-devil armed robbers on Wednesday.

The men of the underworld raped a female victim during the attack.

It was gathered that eight armed-wielding men attacked two vehicles travelling from Lagos State towards Ilesa on the expressway before they reached Osu.

The vehicles – a commercial bus and a car were forcefully stopped by the armed men and were robbed of their valuables, including ATM cards.

One of the victims of the attack, identified as Wale, said the armed robbers raped a female victim among the passengers in the car while the driver of the bus was shot, but did not die.

He added that he, along with a few others who escaped into the bush, informed security operatives, who quickly got to the scene to rescue the victim.

He said, “The driver of the bus was shot but not killed. He was injured. One of the passengers in the car, a woman was raped. Money on us was forcefully taken. They collected all our ATM cards and made us transfer various amounts into their accounts.

“Some of us that escaped into the bush alerted security men. Not long after, policemen, vigilantes and members of Nigeria Hunters and Forest Security Service arrived, and they began to comb the area.

“Few minutes after, they arrested one of the robbers- a man. But others have fled. They took him away. The driver of the bus I was travelling in was rushed to a hospital in Ile-Ife, where he is currently receiving treatment”.

Acting Osun command police spokesperson, Emmanuel Giwa-Alade, when contacted on Thursday, confirmed the incident, saying one of the armed robbers was arrested inside the surrounding bushes.

The arrested suspect has been taken into custody and helping investigation while the injured victims have been taken to hospital for treatment.
