Justice Emmanuel Olayinka Ayoola, a former chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), has passed away at the age of 90. The news of his death was announced in a statement issued by the current ICPC chairman, Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu (SAN), on Wednesday evening.

Justice Ayoola, who celebrated his 90th birthday in October 2023, died on Tuesday, August 20, 2024. He served as the chairman of ICPC from 2005 to 2010 and was renowned for his steadfast fight against corruption during his tenure.

Born in 1933, Justice Ayoola’s legal career spanned over five decades, leaving an indelible mark on the judiciary both in Nigeria and internationally. He was appointed a judge of the High Court of Western Nigeria in 1976 and later served as a judge in Oyo State. His judicial career extended beyond Nigeria, with appointments as a Justice of the Court of Appeal of the Gambia (1980–1983) and Chief Justice of the Gambia (1983–1992). He also held positions as the Vice President of the World Judges Association in 1991, President of the Court of Appeals of Seychelles, and Justice of the Court of Appeal of Nigeria (1992–1998). He was later appointed as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, where he served until his retirement in 2003 at the mandatory age of 70.

In his statement, Dr. Aliyu expressed profound sorrow at the loss of the revered jurist, describing him as a “jurist of international repute” whose legal career was marked by integrity, incisive judgments, and a commitment to justice. He noted that Justice Ayoola’s leadership of the ICPC was defined by a vigorous dedication to the fight against corruption.

“Hon. Justice Ayoola’s demise marks the end of an illustrious chapter in the history of Nigeria’s judiciary and the broader legal profession,” Dr. Aliyu said. “His exemplary life and work have left an indelible mark on the legal profession, inspiring generations of legal practitioners and public servants.”

Justice Ayoola’s contributions to global justice included his role at the Special Court for Sierra Leone, further solidifying his legacy as a defender of the rule of law.

As Nigeria mourns his passing, Dr. Aliyu extended condolences to Justice Ayoola’s family, friends, and colleagues, adding that his legacy will continue to inspire the nation’s efforts in the fight against corruption.

“May the Almighty grant his family the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss,” the ICPC chairman concluded.
