Paris 2024: Nigeria Counts Losses At Olympics

Nigeria’s hope of medalling at the ongoing Paris 2024 Olympics dwindled after Tobi Amusan on Friday morning failed to qualify for the final of the women’s 100m hurdles.

Amusan finished in a shocking third in her semi-final, missing out of the final.

On the same day, the quartet of Emmanuel Ojeli, Ezekiel Nathanial, Dubem Amene, and Chidi Okezie failed to qualify for the final of men’s 4x400m despite finishing second in the semifinal.

They were initially meant to make it to the final scheduled for Saturday but Athletics officials later announced that one of the quartets failed to run in accordance to line or lane rules.

Aside the technical judgement that has now ruled them out with South Africa announced in Nigeria’s place, this is the fastest time a Nigerian 4×4 quartet has run since 2004.

Also, this newspaper learnt that Nigeria’s Esther Omolayo Kolawole has lost in the women’s wrestling 62kg, 5-1 to Kyrgyzstan’s Aisuluu Tynybekova, who won the bout with a Victory by Points.

Also, Nigeria in the men’s 125kg Freestyle wrestling – Ashton Adeyemi Mutuwa has lost by VSU (victory by technical superiority), losing 11-0 to Hungary’s Daniel Ligeti in the second round.

And Nigeria’s Elizabeth Oluchi Anyanacho has lost her second round fight in women’s -67kg Taekwondo event. Anyanacho lost 2-0 (3-3, 8-3) to China’s Jie Song who progressed to the quarterfinals.
