THE Lagos State Government has affirmed its commitment to the planned enforcement of a ban on unregulated commercial bus operations, specifically targeting “Danfos” and “Koropes,” along the Lekki-Epe corridor starting October 1, 2024. Despite circulating speculations about a possible suspension of this plan, officials have clarified that the move aligns with the Lagos State Strategic Transportation Master Plan.
State Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, and Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, have called for the collaboration of public transport bus operators, including Korope and Danfo bus drivers, as the government releases restructuring plans to enhance the commuting experience. Giwa emphasized that the current state of bus operations on the corridor is chaotic, necessitating regulation and integration into the state’s Bus Reform Initiative.
A stakeholders’ meeting was previously held with bus operators and union leaders to discuss the need for compliance before the enforcement date. The Lekki-Epe corridor has been inspected by the Ministry of Transportation and the Lagos Metropolitan Transport Authority (LAMATA) to identify traffic flow limitations and develop a systematic framework to address potential challenges.
Key planned solutions include:
– Restructuring the existing unregulated public transport bus operations on the Lekki-Epe corridor.
– Deploying high-capacity buses on the corridor as outlined in the Lagos Transport Policy and Bus Route Network.
– Re-allocating and relocating Korope/mini buses to inner routes.
– Re-registering and recertifying all buses.
These measures aim to streamline operations and improve overall transportation efficiency along the Lekki-Epe corridor.
