Voice Air Media, VAM News Update

Following the unending political crisis in Rivers State, Seven commissioners loyal to the Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike have resigned from Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s Cabinet.

The five commissioners include, Jacobson Nbina, (Transport), Inime Aguma (Social Welfare and Rehabilitation), Gift Worlu (Housing), Prof Chinedu Mmom (Education) and Austen Ben-Chioma (Environment).

Recalled that at the heat of the political crisis in the state last year, the same commissioners and others left the Fubara’s cabinet, but return back after Presiden Bola Tinubu tried to broker peace between the father and son, including their supporters.

In a resignation letter addressed to Governor Siminalayi Fubara and copied to the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Tammy Danagogo, dated May 15, 2024, Prof Mmom, said he could not continue to work in a toxic environment.

Appreciating Governor Fubara for the opportunity to serve in his cabinet, the Education commissioner said, “There is loss of trust, animosity and sharp division among colleagues in the same cabinet which is unhealthy and very unfortunate”.

Explaining the reason for his resignation, Prof Mmom said: “It is a truism that a calm, safe and friendly environment would stimulate efficient service delivery and enhanced productivity. It is however unfortunate to note that my current work space has become toxic and no longer guarantees a favourable environment to enable me realise my set targets for the Education sector in the State”.

On her part, the Commissioner for Welfare and Rehabilitation, and wife to the late Emma Aguma, former Attorney General of the State, Mrs Aguma said her resignation was in pursuant to the current inconducive working environment.

“It is imperative to tender resignation as Commissioner for Social Welfare and Rehabilitation, Rivers State. I resign with all sense of responsibility especially as there is no room for progressional

development in the work place”.

For the Environment Commissioner, Ben-Chioma, the reason for his resignation was as a result of the ongoing political crisis in the state.

Wishing the governor best in deliberating on the state matters, Ben-Chioma said “I want to sincerely appreciate your Excellency, for giving me the opportunity to be a part of the State Executive Council.

“My decision to resign is due to the political crisis befalling our dear Rivers State and other personal reasons. It was a privilege to have been of service to you in your administration and wish you all, the best in your tenure.”
