Nigeria: Updates you need to know this Thursday morning

Here is Thursday’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday made good his pledge to honour the 17 military personnel killed in Okuama community of Delta State. He described the fallen officers as brave, noble and patriotic men, adding that they will forever be remembered as heroes who answered the call of duty and paid the ultimate price.

2. The Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, has debunked reports that it reduced the price of Premium Motor Spirit and Automotive Gas Oil. Olufemi Soneye, NNPC’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, made the denial in a statement on Wednesday.

3. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the establishment of the Presidential Economic Coordination Council, PECC, and the creation of the Economic Management Team Emergency Taskforce, EET. A statement issued on Wednesday by the President’s spokesman, Ajuri Ngelale, noted that the approvals is sequel to a strategic move to bolster the nation’s economic governance frameworks and ensure robust and coordinated economic planning and implementation.

4. The Chief of Defence Staff, Christopher Musa, has warned that the Nigerian Army will smoke out and punish those behind insecurity in Nigeria. Musa issued the warning during the burial of the 17 soldiers killed in Okuama, Delta State, at the military cemetery in Abuja on Wednesday.

5. The Labour Party, LP, says it has reviewed the performance of its presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, and its governor in Abia State, Alex Otti, and has decided to reserve its tickets for them in the 2027 general elections. A communique circulated after the party’s convention on Wednesday, which was signed by Julius Abure and Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim, National Chairman and National Secretary, respectively, also called on President Bola Tinubu to tackle the rising insecurity and inflation in the country.

6. Troops of the Nigerian Army have killed a notorious terrorist leader, Junaidu Fasagora and scores of his fighters in Zamfara State. A statement issued by the Nigerian Army via their official X handle revealed that Junaidu Fasagora and his terrorists’ group have long been responsible for series of kidnappings and other terrorism activities across several states in the North West.

7. Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has declared that his administration will not be cut short, as he claimed that the people of Rivers State can attest that he won the 2023 gubernatorial election. Fubara, who called on the people of the state not to panic, spoke while addressing members of the Family Support Group, who were on a solidarity visit to the Government House in Port Harcourt, on Wednesday.

8. The embattled National Chairman of the Labour Party, LP, Mr Julius Abure, has been re-elected for a second term by a unanimous affirmation of delegates. The Chairman of the National Convention and Deputy Governor of Abia State, Mr Ikechukwu Emetu, declared Abure the winner during the party’s national convention that held on Wednesday in Nnewi, Anambra State.

9. The Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit, NFIU, has uncovered 27 cells belonging to the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, IPOB, in 22 countries across the globe, including the United States of America, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The unit in its ‘Counter Terrorism Financing Newsletter’ dated February 26, 2024, said the US and the UK housed the largest number of those cells per country, with seven and six in both countries.

10. The Federal Government has declared Friday, 29th March and Monday, 1st April as public holidays to mark the Good Friday and Easter Monday, respectively. In a statement by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr Aishetu Gogo Ndayako, on Wednesday, the minister said that Easter promotes values of love, forgiveness and compassion which are essential for social cohesion and harmony.
