Prof Ifemidayo Akinmoladun, a USA professor and APC House of Representatives aspirant in the last general elections in Osun State, has proffered a holistic approach to solving the power challenges in Nigeria that would involve addressing both the supply and demand sides of the issue.
The Ijesha North Federal constituency leader, in his words, said that on the supply side, the government can invest in the expansion and modernization of the country’s power infrastructure including the construction of new power plants and transmission lines. This he said could involve promoting renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power to diversify the energy mix and reduce dependency on fossil fuels. In addition, he said that efforts could be made to improve the efficiency and reliability of existing power plants and transmission networks.
On the demand side, Professor Akinmoladun said that measures could be taken to promote energy conservation and efficiency, such as the implementation of energy-efficient building codes and standards, as well as the promotion of energy-efficient appliances and equipment. This he said could also involve promoting public awareness campaigns and education programs to encourage energy-saving habits and behaviors.
The former US university professor further suggested that power theft and illegal connections should be strongly addressed which would help to improve the overall reliability and availability of power in the country.
Professor Akinmoladun urged the government to address the underlying institutional and governance issues that contribute to the power challenges in Nigeria. He said that this should involve reforms to improve the transparency and accountability of the power sector, as well as putting in place measures to attract private investment and promote competition in the electricity market.
“Ultimately, solving the power challenges in Nigeria will require a comprehensive and coordinated effort that addresses the technical, economic, social, and political dimensions of the issue. By taking a holistic approach, the country can work towards a more sustainable and reliable power system that meets the needs of its citizens and supports economic growth and development.”, Professor Akinmoladun said.
