Here is Wednesday’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:
1. There was drama on Tuesday as the Senate suspended Senator Abdul Ningi for three months over his false claims that projects worth N3.7trillion in the 2024 budget were not traceable. On his part, Senator Kawu Sumaila (NNPP – Kano South) was warned to desist from spreading false information capable of destabilising the Senate.
2. President Bola Tinubu has appointed Dr Dayo Mobereola as the new Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA, for a renewable term of four years. Mobereola’s appointment followed the exit of the former Director General of the agency, Mr. Bashir Jamoh, whose tenure recently expired.
3. Barely six days after the abduction of 287 pupils at Kuriga in Chikun Local Government Area, bandits have reportedly kidnapped no fewer than 61 persons during an invasion of Buda Hausa, another Kaduna community in Kajuru Local Government Area.
4. Some sections of the popular Wuse market were set ablaze on Tuesday by irate youths protesting the killing of a suspect by a Police officer attached to the Federal Capital Territory Administration, FCTA, Mobile Court. Eyewitnesses said the police officer mistook the suspect’s excuse to go to the mosque for prayers for attempts to escape after the Court ruled he should be taken into custody.
5. The Federal Government has invited memoranda from the public as it begins the probe of private universities established in the last 15 years. The Federal Government initiated the probe following an investigation uncovering certificate racketeering in neighbouring Benin Republic and Togo.
6. The House of Representatives, on Tuesday, called on the Office of the National Security Adviser to coordinate intelligence and security operations in the country, particularly Kaduna State, following last week’s abduction of over 200 students in the Chikun Local Government Area of the state by suspected bandits.
7. The Lagos State Police Command has revealed that Ibrahim Owodunni, aka Primeboy, was interrogated at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, Yaba, on Tuesday, owing to a petition filed by Wunmi, the wife of the late singer, Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad.
8. Nigerian Army, 63 Brigade, Asaba, Delta State, has arrested one Mr Eboka, a 22-year-old man and his parents in Onicha Olona, Aniocha North Local Government Area of the state, over alleged illegal arms manufacturing. Commander of 63 Brigade, Brig.-Gen. Ugochukwu Unachukwu, who briefed newsmen on the development, said the factory can produce 10 guns a week.
9. Edo State Deputy Governor, Hon Philip Shaibu, on Tuesday, denied being served with impeachment notice from the State House of Assembly as claimed by the Speaker, Hon. Blessing Agbebaku during plenary, on Monday. The inability of the House, according to the Speaker, to physically serve Shaibu led to a substituted service through advertorial in the newspaper.
10. President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday met with Senate representatives led by the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, at the State House. The meeting came shortly after the suspension of Senator Abdul Ningi of Bauchi Central, PDP, who recently alleged that the 2024 Budget had been padded up to the tune of ₦3 trillion.
