Inspire Inclusion: Int’l Women’s Day Dedicated For Family Planning In Osun

THE Osun State ministry of health and state primary health care board, with the collaboration of ‘The Challenge Initiative, TCI and DevComs Network, held media chat, on Thursday in commemorate to 2024 International Women’s Day (IWD) with the Honourable Commissioner of Health, Barrister Jola Akintola, and other stakeholders.

The Theme for this year’s IWD is, ‘Inspire Inclusion: Inspire others to Understand & value women’s inclusion to accept contraceptives’.

Akintola, in his address said, “Inspire Inclusion’, calls for actions that encourage diversity, equity and inclusivity across realms of society including healthcare.

He added that this year’s celebration of the IWD serves as a vocal point for women’s rights globally with emphasis on the importance of gender equality, women’s empowerment and right to reproductive health choices.

“Family Planning is a reproductive rights for women that ensures access to comprehensive reproductive healthcare services for women of all backgrounds.”

In her address, the Program Director of TCI and DevComs Network, Ms Omobonike Adebayo said,

“As we commemorate International Women’s Day 2024, DevComs Network calls on governments, policymakers, Civil Society Organizations, stakeholders and individuals in the eight states (Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Borno, Jigawa, Kwara, Osun, Sokoto and Yobe) to prioritize investments in women and girls, with a specific focus on Family Planning and inclusive health research.
By doing so, we can accelerate progress towards achieving gender equality and building a more equitable world for all Nigerians.

State-based media organisations in the eight states and the other mediums in 13 other states will commemorate series of public awareness activities to mark this year’s IWD.”

Osun State Coordinator of Family Planning under the State’s Ministry of Health, Mrs Ololade Abatan said women should be involved in the scheme of things and be conscious of their rights.

She encouraged all women, the girl child and adolescents to take good care of themselves including their health and avoid unplanned children by visiting health facilities across the state for Family Planning to avoid maternal deaths and abortions that could lead to untimely deaths.

Stakeholders present were; Dr Oluwatoyin Ojediran, State coordinator WHO; Solape Folarin, NPHCDA Abuja, Erelo Jumoke Olafadehan, MSI Reproductive Choices, Nigeria; Olatunde Raimi and Oluwafunsho Daniel, The Challenge Initiative (TCI), and many others.
