Prominent activist Aisha Yesufu has criticised the Supreme Court judgment affirming Governor Abdullahi Sule’s election victory in Nasarawa State.
The apex court on Friday dismissed a petition against the election by the Peoples Democratic Party and its candidate, Emmanuel Ombugadu.
Reacting on X on Friday, Yesufu said the judgment amounted to “robbery” and a “coup” against the will of the Nasarawa people.
“Nasarawa people were robbed of their mandate. This is a coup on the people. They chose who they wanted and were denied their mandate,” she wrote.
Yesufu described the ruling as “another sad day for democracy in Nigeria.”
In a unanimous judgment, the Supreme Court said the PDP’s petition lacked probative value to warrant upturning the election.
Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun held that the allegations made against the election by the PDP were not established.
But Yesufu insisted the judgment subverted the will of Nasarawa citizens who voted for change.
She accused the Supreme Court of denying the people their chosen governor in Ombugadu.
