University Graduate Takes Own Life After Applying For 500 Jobs

Vera Omondi, a 2019 graduate of Masinde Muliro University in Kenya has committed suicide after failing to secure a job five years after completing her studies.

The body of the lady from Gem constituency was found by her mother, Herine Okoth on Thursday, January 11, 2024, dangling inside a bathroom at their home in Umiru village Nyamninia sub-location, with her academic certificates placed on her bed.

Confirming the incident, Siaya County Police Commander Cleti Kimaiyo noted that the mother Herine Okoth had gone to wake the deceased up when she noticed she was missing.

She then proceeded to the bathroom which is adjacent to Vera’s house only to find her daughter’s body hanging in the bathroom with a rope around her neck.

Kimaiyo said;

“Mrs Okoth was shocked to find her daughter dangling from the rooftop. She had applied for more than 500 jobs without success and yet her mother was still struggling to sustain her.”

Preliminary findings by the police have established before the deceased went to sleep yesterday, January 10, she questioned her mum about her unemployment status.

Kimaiyo stated that the deceased did not leave behind any suicide notes but only left all her certificates on her bed. He said the body has since been moved to the Yala sub-county hospital mortuary pending autopsy as investigations begin into the matter.

“We dashed to the scene and responded to the distress call. We moved the body to the Yala morgue pending postmodern analysis.”
