Police arrest murder suspect, POS fraudster, others in Rivers— Report

Rivers Police Command has paraded some of the suspects arrested during recent operations to combat crimes in different parts of the state.

 

Rivers Police Commissioner, CP Emeka Nwonyi paraded the suspects in Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers State, during a press briefing on Friday.

 

 

One of the suspects paraded was one Isaac Okoma who was arrested over alleged murder of one Josephine Ibiju of Baptist Waterfront on Saturday, June 10,2023.

 

The Police Commissioner said preliminary investigation has commenced, and the case will soon be transferred to SCID, Port Harcourt.

 

He added that operatives of the Command’s Octopus Unit, Port Harcourt, raided a notorious criminal hideout at Rumuokwuta, Obio-Akpor Local Government Area on Friday, during which they recovered 14 rounds of 7.62 mm long-live ammunition, one Lar Rifle Magazine, 50 wraps of weeds suspected to be Indian Hemp, 42 sachets of hard drugs suspected to be loud, six sachets of Chelsea drink, 20 sachets of Eagle drink, 10 sachets of Tombo bitters, four packets of cigarettes, and five assorted GSM handsets were recovered.

The Police Commissioner, however, said the criminals occupying the den escaped on sighting the policemen.

 

He said efforts have been intensified to arrest fleeing suspects.

 

He stated further that operatives of the Anti-cultism Unit of Rivers Police Command, on Sunday, July 30, 2023, at about 1430hrs, while on stop and search along Aluu/Omagwa Road, sighted a Volvo vehicle with reg. no. NKR 933 XA registered in Imo State with two occupants.

 

The suspects abandoned the vehicle and escaped into the bush on sighting the police operatives.

 

He said one AK-47 riffle, three AK-47 magazines, 12 rounds of 7.66mm ammunition, one pump-action riffle, and an empty black bag were recovered when the abandoned vehicle was searched.

 

The Rivers State Police Commissioner added that following a complaint from one Wale Alabi in Borikiri area of the state, police operatives from the Command arrested one Precious Frank, who specializes in generating fake alerts to defraud POS operators and shopkeepers in Rivers State on 2 August.

He said luck ran against the suspect when he went to the complainant’s shop, did a transaction of N100,000 and generated a fake alert message, and immediately disappeared from the area.

 

The Rivers Police Commissioner said the suspect has given detailed information that will lead to the arrest of other members of the gang defrauding people using the same method in the Port Harcourt metropolis.

 

The Police Commissioner said operatives of Hunter Strike Unit of the Command on Thursday in Port Harcourt, engaged three suspected Kidnappers who attacked one Samuel Okonkwo , a bolt driver, and his passenger, Okorie U. Arinze in gun battle

 

He said the kidnappers were about to abduct the passenger when police operatives arrived at the scene.

 

According to him, the hoodlums fled and abandoned the vehicle and the victims after gun battle with the police operatives.
