No fewer than 34 people who were taking refuge at a primary school in Mgban, Nyiev council ward of Guma Local Government Area of Benue State have been killed by gunmen.
The incident reportedly happened around 9pm on Friday night.
This is coming barely two days after the murder of 46 people at Umogidi in Otukpo Local Government Area of the state.
The local government chairman, Mike Aba, who spoke through the security officer of the local government, Christopher Waku, described the attack as genocide.
Waku, who said he was speaking from the scene of the incident, said that 24 corpses were picked from the classrooms where the residents were taking refuge while 10 corpses were picked on the road indicating they were escaping the attack when they were hit by bullets.
“It happened yesterday (Friday), about few minutes after 9pm. Some armed men suspected to be herders came and attacked the community called Mgban; killed 34 persons while over 40 were severely injured and have been taking to the hospital. This killing can best be described as genocide,” Waku said.
The State Police Command spokesperson, Catherine Anene, confirmed the attack, adding that more details would be provided soon.
