It is still afresh as Ogbeni (the popular demeanor of Rauf Aregbesola), minister of interior and former governor of Osun state, did not vote at the February 25, 2023 Presidential election that brought in Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the president-elect from his political party, APC.
It would be recalled that Aregbesola also ignored the July 16, 2022 governorship election in the state that brought in Senator Ademola Adeleke from opposition, PDP against his party, APC candidate, Gboyega Oyetola.
Voice Air Media (VAM) checked at the minister’s polling unit at Isare ward 8, Ilesha east, affirmed that Aregbesola didn’t vote in the the two previous elections.
Many of Osun residents are curious to see the next move of the Minister as his political relevance seems to be on thin ice.
Since the return of democracy in 1999, Ogbeni has been among one the active regional politicians.
Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola became the governor of Osun state from 2010 to 2018, after serving eight years of his tenure as a commissioner in Lagos state. In 2019, he was appointed as the Minister of Interior under President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration which is set to be over soon.
As the popular saying, “something must kill a man”. The interpretation could be translated into many versions but owing to this note, it implies “something must be the source for a man’s downfall”.
Here’s it,
Aregbesola is reportedly to be in a battle with his godfather, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the president-elect after the just concluded election of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on Saturday, February 20th, 2023.
Although, they both denied the report claiming that their mutualism is still intact. But Aregbesola’s comment about Tinubu in recent times shows that there is a clear difference between them.
According to the Minister of Interior, “beyond his status, Asiwaju turned himself into a god over us”.
Following his assertion, his Lagos political structure collapsed and later see the aftermath in Osun state.
It is glaring how Aregbesola got disgraced after the candidate he presented, Moshood Adeoti against Gboyega Oyetola lose big in the 2023 APC primary election.
What a large margin, Oyetola polled 222,169 votes, placing Adeoti behind with 12,921 votes.
Also, Aregbesola did not engage in campaigning for Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s bid before the presidential election on the 20th of February, 2023. All of these occurrences is depicting that something is wrong somewhere.
ASIWAJU BOLA AHMED TINUBU NATURE
The president-elect, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu is naturally a smart, brave, and strong politician. He served as the Governor of Lagos State from 1999 to 2007 and Senator for Lagos West during the brief Third Republic.
Asiwaju is well respected for his leadership capacity not only for himself but as well as helping other politicians fulfilling their political dreams.
Amongst the politicians, he has helped in the southwest including Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, Governor Dapo Abiodun, Babatunde Fashola, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Adegboyega Oyetola, and Akinkunmi Ambode just to mention the few.
And while dealing with them, Asiwaju always emphasized loyalty with a touch of entitlement.
Recalling how he dealt with Akinwumi Ambode by denying him from governing Lagos state in his second tenure, which was just like a play. Could Aregbesola’s case be the same?
Although, amid the break in the cordial relationship between Aregbesola and Bola Tinubu, the minister still penned a congratulatory message to him after the presidential election.
WHAT NEXT FOR AREGBESOLA?
The 2023 presidential term of Muhammadu Buhari will mark the conclusion of Aregbesola’s appointment as a minister.
And due to his dispute with Oyetola and Tinubu, the minister has already lost control of the APC power structure in Osun and Lagos.
However, Aregbesola’s political future is in the trash as his time as a minister draws to a close, particularly if he stays in the ruling party.
What he does next will undoubtedly determine his political future.
COULD PDP BE HIS SAVIOUR?
Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola is yet to declare his next step after the conclusion of Buhari’s administration and he has no fate in the Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu government.
The minister might adopt a second plan. Seeing a billboard with the picture of Aregbesola, there’s a small PDP flag attached. Could this be a sign that OGBENI is decamping to PDP?
