Like Tribunal Sacks Governor Adeleke, Court Removes NNPP Senator-elect In Kano

Voice Air Media news Update

THE Supreme Court of Nigeria has ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission to replace Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau with Rufai Hanga as the Senator-elect for Kano Central Senatorial District.

INEC has on February 25 announced Shekarau as the winner of the election in the district.

But in a judgement on Friday delivered by Justice Uwani Abba-Aji, the court upheld the decision of the Appeal Court that was delivered in January.

Shekarau won the New Nigerian People’s Party ticket in June but he dumped the party later after falling out with the presidential candidate of the NNPP, Dr Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

He at that point announced his intentions to abandon his ambition on the platform of the NNPP.

Recall that Osun State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal on January 27th sacked Governor Ademola Adeleke and ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC, to withdraw the certificate of return issued to him and issue a fresh one to Oyetola as the duly elected governor of Osun.

The tribunal held that Adeleke did not score the majority of lawful votes during the July 16, 2022 governorship election in the state.

Adeleke, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was declared the winner of the governorship poll held on July 16. In August 2022, Gboyega Oyetola, former Osun governor, and the All Progressives Congress (APC) petitioned the tribunal to challenge the victory of Adeleke on the grounds that Adeleke did not qualify to contest the election and that there was overvoting in 749 polling units across 10 local government areas of the state.

Meanwhile, Voice Air Media learnt that Governor Ademola Jackson Adeleke has filed an Appeal against the tribunal judgement.
