THE police have arrested one Aminu Muhammed, a student, for tweeting a post mocking Aisha Buhari, first lady.
The tweet, which was posted in Hausa in June 2022, reads: “Su mama anchi kudin talkawa ankoshi.”
The tweet, which was accompanied with a photograph of Aisha Buhari, loosely translates as “Mama has eaten poor people’s money and is now full”.
Muhammed was initially said to have been arrested by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) on November 18, but TheCable understands that he was arrested by the police.
A source familiar with the incident said Muhammed is a 500-level student of the Federal University Dutse, Jigawa.
It was learnt that he was “beaten “mercilessly before he was eventually whisked away from the institution by the officers said to have been deployed from the federal capital territory (FCT).
“Contrary to reports that Muhammed was arrested by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) officers, the police were behind the arrest,” the source said.
“The police did not notify the school authorities. They just came in and picked him up and left.”
It is unclear if the student has been allowed to make contact with his family or a lawyer.
Muyiwa Adejobi, force public relations officer, is yet to respond to enquiries on the development.
The development comes weeks after a magistrate court in Kano ordered that two skit makers be given 20 strokes of the cane for defaming Abdullahi Ganduje, the state governor.
The skit makers were arrested and taken to court after they were captured in a viral TikTok video calling out Ganduje.
They were charged to court on a two-count charge on defamation and sedition.
At the hearing, Aminu Gabari, the magistrate, ordered that the pair be given 20 strokes of the cane each and also be made to sweep the court premises for 30 days(TheCable). CONTINUE READING…
