The Aree stool became vacant in July 2018, after Oba Jimoh Olayoonu joined his ancestors but efforts to appoint a new monarch for the town have been unsuccessful.

However, on June 27th, 2022, his lordship, Justice S.O Falola gave a judgement that put a stop to the imbroglio surrounding the selection a new monarch.

Since June when the judgement has been given, one would have expected that both the State government and the kingmakers to expedite actions in making sure due process is followed in appointing the new Aree of Iree, unfortunately, letter that should emanate from the State government that will kick-start the process of appointing the new monarch was restrained from the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs for no reason.
