PDP presidential candidate suspends meeting with Nigerian editors

Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, failed to show up for the meeting with the Nigerian Guild of Editors’ Forum on Tuesday.

The forum scheduled for 6pm at Colonnades Hotel in Ikoyi, Lagos, was intended for editors to interrogate Atiku on the policy options he would be presenting to Nigerians as the country prepared for the 2023 general election.

Many editors were already on seats at 3 pm but the forum was later called off around 8 pm after Atiku did not show up.

However, the presidential candidate sent a team to apologize to the editors.

Clement Edo-Osagie who led the team noted that Atiku was absent due to his hectic schedule.

He noted that the presidential candidate had been traveling a lot and could not get enough rest that will enable him to prepare for tonight’s hot seat with editors.

Osagie, however, urged the editors not to interpret his absence as a sign of disrespect to the media.

He said: “Atiku has tremendous respect for the media, he doesn’t take you for granted. He is pledging that he will make himself available at the right time.”

Meanwhile, Atiku who came into Lagos today had a meeting with party members, leaders, and candidates for various positions in the forthcoming elections early in the day.

Speaking at the meeting, Atiku said he was marveled by the level of mobilization of party members in Lagos State ahead of the 2023 general elections.

He said: “Now, in all my political career, we are the people who established PDP, I have never seen Lagos state so mobilised like this.

“This makes me believe that this electoral time, PDP is going to win Lagos. I believe you are going to win Lagos state this time around,” the former vice president said.

Atiku, who promised to support the party to win the 2023 elections in the state, urged the party stakeholders to work harder to achieve the feat.

“Therefore, we are ready to support you to any level to make sure that you win Lagos state. You know, when I say I am going to do something, bring the sky down, I will make sure I do it.

“Therefore, I want you to work harder, we will cooperate with you, we will support you and protect you to make sure that this time around, you win Lagos state,” he added.

The PDP presidential candidate, who noted that the campaign had not started, said he was in the state to see the situation of things in the party.

He said: “I have come to see for myself that PDP is on the ground in Lagos State, and I have seen things for myself.

“That makes me believe that this time around ‘Jandor’ (PDP governorship candidate) is going to be the next governor of Lagos state. You will see what we are going to do when the campaigns start.”

He commended the party members for their support, patience, and persistence.

Atiku, in another meeting today organized by the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), also spoke about his economic blueprint for Nigeria.

He said he will create an Economic Stimulus Fund with an initial investment capacity of approximately US$10 billion to prioritize support to MSMEs across all the economic sectors within the first 100 days in office if given the mandate to lead the country come 2023.

The former vice president promised to take five bold steps including undertaking an immediate review of government spending with a view to eliminating all leakages arising from subsidy payments; stopping all financial support to ailing State-Owned enterprises; improving spending efficiency by gradual reduction of government recurrent expenditures; undertake a review of government procurement processes to ensure value-for-money as well as eliminate all leakages and focus on non-debt financing by promoting a private sector led infrastructure development fund for the financing and delivery of key infrastructure projects.
