King Of Thieves (Agesinkole): Movie Review

Plot: King of Thieves is an epic tale of Agesinkole, an all-powerful bandit, and his reign of terror in the prosperous Kingdom of Ajeromi. Concerned by his pillaging, the kingdom moves to destroy him through the hunters, witches, and priests, thus beginning this adventurous saga of revenge, bravery, and glory.

Review: The film, which is set in the pre-modern Yoruba era, tells the tale of Agesinkole, an all-powerful bandit-warrior who will do anything to threaten and destroy the affluent kingdom of Ajeromi.

In an effort to end Agesinkole’s reign of terror, the kingdom, led by King Adegbite, the great-grandson of Tadenikaro, employs both spiritual and physical attacks through priests, witches, wizards, and warriors. However, with each attempt, Agesinkole grows more lethal.

No one was spared during this utter terror reign, and the King eventually lost his sole son to the battle. At some point, twist of fate led the head hunter, Oguntade, to face the unstoppable Agesinkole and his ruthless men.

This encounter led to Agesinkole’s eventual revelation of his true identity as a reincarnated Prince Adeoye, the great-grandfather of Oguntade who had been wrongfully denied the Ajeromi throne by an elite plot led by his rival King Tadenikaro, the great-grandfather of the current King Adegbite. This revealed a tale of betrayal, vengeance, friendship, courage, and love.

Excellent cinematography is used in King of Thieves to highlight the beauty of various scenes.

NOTE: Apart from the fact that the costumes in the film are stunning, the film also thrillingly highlighted various facets of Yoruba culture, including king making/royalty, religion, worship, spirituality, defense/war, business, taxation, recreation, and many more.

The significance of women in Yoruba politics and nation-building is another part of culture that the film highlights.
