Movie Review: Watcher (2022)

Plot: Evil wants to be seen.

As a serial killer stalks the city, Julia – a young actress who just moved to town with her husband – notices a mysterious stranger watching her from across the street.

Review: In the movie, Julia follows her marketing businessman husband Francis to Bucharest where they set up an opulent apartment.

Additionally, things become unsettling as Benjamin Kirk Nielsen’s voyeuristic camerawork pulls away while Julia and Francis make love for the first time in their new house. The following morning, Julia is left alone with Francis going for work, learning Romanian, and doing simple tasks like getting coffee from a nearby cafe. Along with getting to know her neighbors and fellow residents, she also makes a few acquaintances, notably the bilingual Irina.

From the nearby apartment complex, Julia detects a figure watching her. She feels suffocated and like a potential target, which is understandable given recent news reports of a serial killer killing young women. Seeing a strange man too frequently to dismiss it as coincidence also makes her feel validated. There is undoubtedly something wrong with this silent, seemingly empty man even if he is not the murderer.

As captivating and expertly made as the picture is, Watcher is unquestionably a film about the payoff. With a merciless conclusion, the script seeks to make a point about what happens when males don’t listen to or take women’s concerns seriously. But for such a believable and disturbing character study, the closing moments of watcher develop cold feet and double back on the message it want to pass.
