Police Strike: DIG Kokumo Visits Osun, Reassures Improved Welfare Of Officers

By Bright Gbotemi

The Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) in charge of South-West, Johnson Kokumo, has urged police officers to shun unethical practices in order not to be seen as lawbreakers.

Kokumo gave the advice on Wednesday, 23rd March during his official visit to headquarters of the Nigeria Police Force, Osun State Command in Osogbo the state capital.

He said that police, as law enforcers and peacemakers must continue to function within the ambit of the law and should not be seen as breakers of the law.

“We must stay away from unprofessional conduct; we ought to be law-abiding and not to be seen as breaking the law with impunity.

“Police, as the lead agency in internal security, must take its position and resist any act that can lead us to be unprofessional.

“We need to be truly the friend of the masses by being professional and having respect to the rights of members of the public.

“We are being paid and funded by the taxpayers’ money and we must provide adequate security for the protection of lives and property of the citizens and not unleashing terror on the public,” Kokumo said.

The DIG said that IGP Alkali Baba was willing and would continue to work at ensuring improved welfare for the officers.

He said that President Muhammadu Buhari had approved an increased of 20% salary package for the officers and men of the force.

Kokumo said that the IGP and the Police Service Commission were working assiduously at ensuring that the police received the salary increment within the shortest possible time.

“I assure you that any moment from now, you will collect the increment in salary in the shortest possible time.

“There is a need to reciprocate the gesture of the president and the IGP by being dedicated to your duty,” the DIG said.

He reminded the officers that they could not embark on strike, urging them not to allow anyone to mislead them.

Kokumo commended the Police Command in Osun State on their efforts at tackling insecurity in the state.

Earlier, the Commissioner of Police in Osun State, CP Olawale Olokode, said Osun State remains one of the most peaceful, not only in the South West but by extension, in the whole country.

CP Olokode said his men are excited and grateful for the DIG to have chosen to visit Osun at this suspicious time of “intending purported strike action by members of the rank and file of the Inspector of the Force and growing insecurity challenges Nationwide.

Olokode in his address reads in part,

“Our DIG sir, having visited Oyo command earlier, we in the Osun State Command are excited and grateful that you have chosen to visit us at this auspicious time when there is intending purported strike action by members of Rank and File and Inspector of the Force and growing insecurity challenges nationwide.

As you know Sir, Osun State is bounded by Kwara State in the North, Ekiti and Ondo States in the East, Oyo State in the West and Ogun State in the South.

The State, with the Command having 48 Divisional Headquarters, 8 Area Commands and 71 Police Posts occasionally record pockets of incidents such as Kidnapping, Thuggery/Cultism, Ritual killings, Internet fraud, Religious crisis, and Communal/Chieftaincy disputes, which we have always risen up to curtail promptly; notwithstanding, Osun State remains one of the most peaceful, not only in the South West but by extension, in the whole country, as at today; due to the outstanding security mechanisms put in place by the Command, in collaboration with Sister Agencies and Civilian JTF such as; Vigilante, Hunters, Agbekoya, Omo-Ode Agbekoya, OPC etc.

However Sir, the Command is faced with manpower and logistic challenges, dilapidated living accommodation (Barracks) and lack of modern policing gadgets etc.

This directly or indirectly has had its toll on service delivery. It is therefore the Command’s prayer and belief that the DIG’s visit at this crucial period would afford him the honour to help the Command in looking into the enumerated challenges, to get the best performances from my disciplined, loyal and duty-conscious officers and men of the Command.

In a nut-shell, I want to once again welcome the Deputy Inspector-General of Police and his entourage to Osun State Police Command today and to inform the DIG that, the officers and men of the Command have been lectured/ sensitized against embarking on purported strike action by the junior cadre of the Force and the IGP’s welfare package for the officers and men of the Force. We also pledge our unalloyed support to ensure your visit is a huge success.
Once again, on behalf of officers and men of the Command, I I wish you and your entourage a happy visit and journey mercy.” CONTINUE READING….
