$98m Islamic bank loan to boost bilingual education in Osun, eight other states

The Federal Government has secured $98 million facilities from the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) for the promotion of bilingual education in nine states.

The nine states are: Adamawa, Borno, Gombe, Kaduna, Kano, Kwara, Nasarawa, Niger and Osun.

Head of Public Relations and Protocol at the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), David Apeh, announced this in a statement yesterday in Abuja.

The statement said the bank’s Board of Executive Directors approved the multi-year financial facility programme for the promotion of bilingual education in Nigeria, covering 2012 to 2015.

According to the statement, the aim of the project is to contribute to the improvement of the socio-economic condition of Nigeria, ensure inclusive education and promote bilingual education.

The statement added that the major components of the project are meant to create access to basic education, improve quality and enhance the management capacity of school administrators.

It said 30 bilingual education boarding schools would be built in the nine states, which would boost enrolment and reduce the out-of-school-children (OOSC) syndrome as well as expose learners to the knowledge of Information and Communications Technology (ICT).

“The project is being coordinated at the national level by the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), National Coordinating Unit (NCU) with supervision by the Federal Ministry of Education and the Federal Ministry of Finance, Budget and National Planning,” the statement said.
