The Peoples Democratic Party’s National Working Committee, chaired by Uche Secondus, will have its valedictory session on Wednesday.
According to report, the session which would be conducted at the PDP National Secretariat barring any last-minute alterations, will offer a chance for outgoing members of the NWC to evaluate their actions and put the finishing touches on their handover notes.
Secondus is unlikely to attend the ceremony due to a court injunction prohibiting him from presenting himself as national chairman.
The previous NWC’s mandate formally ends on December 9; the next administration, led by Iyiochia Ayu, takes over on December 10.
While confirming the valedictory session, the outgoing National Publicity Secretary of the party, Kola Ologbondiyan, said, “Yes, we will be holding our valedictory session on Wednesday, by God’s grace.”
A Rivers State High Court presided over by Justice O. Gbasam of the Degema Judicial Division vacation court, sitting in Port Harcourt, had on August 23, 2021, granted the order.
This was sequel to the consideration of an ex parte application in suit No: PHC/2183/CS/2021 filed by Ibeabuchi Alex, Dennis Amadi, Emmanuel Stephen and Umezirike Onucha against Uche Secondus (1st defendant) and the PDP (2nd defendant).
Barely 24 hours later, the Deputy National Chairman (South), Yomi Akinwonmi, released a statement proclaiming himself the interim national chairman in Secondus’ absence, invoking Section 45 (2) of the PDP constitution.
However, a few hours after the announcement, members of the party’s NWC, led by Nazif, invaded the PDP national secretariat with armed police officers and proceeded directly into the NWC conference room for a meeting that began about 2 p.m.
Nazif declared himself acting chairman shortly after the meeting, which lasted roughly 40 minutes.
After recognizing Akinwonmi, it needed the involvement of the party’s National Executive Committee to restore order.
