Peter Obi has broken his silence after a Federal High Court in Abuja nullified the leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and voided the emergence of Atiku Abubakar as its 2027 presidential candidate.
Obi, who is running on the platform of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), said the judgment came at a wrong time and raises serious questions ahead of the general elections.
He argued that with just three months to the polls, Nigerians need certainty, not legal confusion over candidates and parties.
The former Anambra governor went further to accuse the ruling party of sponsoring the crisis, saying it is part of a deliberate strategy to weaken the opposition – the same strategy he claims was used against the Labour Party and his own campaign.
“It is not good to have too many uncertainties about candidates and parties a few weeks before a presidential election. One mark of democracy is that at all times, it is voters and not courts that choose leaders,” Obi said.
He warned that with coups spreading across West Africa, Nigeria must protect its democracy by allowing opposition parties to thrive, pledging to defend opposition stability if elected president.
