Veteran Nollywood legend Pete Edochie has finally addressed the controversy that trailed his viral greeting with the Ooni of Ife.
The actor appeared on Isbae U’s _Curiosity Made Me Ask_ and explained the moment that set social media on fire. In the video, Edochie was seen giving the monarch what looked like a backhand handshake and high-five instead of prostrating.
According to him, KOK pointed out that the Ooni was at the event, and as he moved closer, the king raised his hand in greeting. Edochie said the exchange was mutual and came from a place of familiarity, not disrespect. He clarified that the type of handshake was one reserved for people of high status and title.
Edochie also revealed that he and the Ooni are not strangers. The two first met at Okija where he was invited on stage and formally introduced to the monarch. He said that meeting sparked a genuine friendship that has continued over the years, including a later encounter in Lagos.
The actor praised the Ooni as an exceptionally brilliant and humble leader, and said he holds him in very high regard. He added that people are free to interpret the viral moment however they like, but he stands by his actions.
The video had earlier divided opinions online, with many debating the proper way to greet a traditional ruler.
During the same interview, Edochie also spoke on polygamy, using the story of his late uncle who had three wives to explain its challenges. The clip quickly went viral, with fans linking his comments to his son Yul Edochie’s marriage.
