Nigerian Government Renames Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway After Tinubu

THE Federal Government has renamed the 750-kilometre Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway in honour of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing the project as one of the landmark infrastructure achievements of his administration.

Minister of Works David Umahi announced the decision on Thursday, saying the road would henceforth bear the name of the President in recognition of his vision and commitment to delivering what has become one of Nigeria’s most ambitious highway projects.

Umahi said the coastal highway was a long-held dream of Tinubu, revealing that the President conceived the idea nearly 27 years ago before assuming office.

“By the powers conferred on me as the Honourable Minister of Works, and after consultations with the Permanent Secretary, the Minister of State, directors and the management of the ministry, we have resolved to name the entire Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” Umahi said.

According to the minister, the renaming is a tribute to Tinubu’s resilience and determination in transforming the vision into reality despite initial skepticism, legal disputes and public controversies that greeted the project’s commencement in March 2024.

Since construction began, work has continued across various sections of the highway, with significant progress already recorded and parts of the project nearing completion. The Federal Government has repeatedly described the coastal road as a strategic economic corridor expected to improve transportation, boost trade, promote tourism and enhance connectivity along Nigeria’s southern coastline.

Estimated to cost about ₦15 trillion upon completion, the highway stretches from Lagos to Calabar, passing through several coastal states and forming one of the largest road infrastructure projects in the country’s history.

Despite criticism and concerns raised during the early stages of construction, the Tinubu administration has maintained that the project remains a national priority, insisting it will unlock economic opportunities, create jobs and stimulate regional development.
