Basketball World Cup qualifier: Nigeria’s D’Tigers crush Rwanda

Nigeria’s men’s senior basketball team, D’Tigers, delivered a masterclass performance to dismantle Rwanda 106-62 in their final Group C fixture of the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup African Qualifiers.

The blowout victory ensured the Nigerian side concluded the grueling three-game window undefeated, adding to their earlier triumphs over Tunisia and Guinea.

Point guard Uche Iroegbu orchestrated the offensive clinic, anchoring the backcourt with an impressive 17 points and seven assists. The scoring load was evenly distributed across the roster, with Caleb Agada, Ikechukwu Mekowulu, and Stan Okoye providing heavy reinforcement by chipping in 13 points apiece to overwhelm the Rwandan defense.

The dominant finale stands in sharp contrast to the high-stakes drama that defined the earlier stages of the tournament window. Nigeria opened its qualification campaign by grinding out a narrow 84-81 victory over a resilient Tunisian squad.

The momentum carried into their second fixture, which required an even greater display of grit. D’Tigers pulled off a thrilling 80-79 comeback win against Guinea after erasing a late deficit in the final minutes.

During that high-wire encounter, Caleb Agada spearheaded the offense with a 22-point showing, supported by Uche Iroegbu’s 14 points and Kaodirichi Akobundu-Ehiogu’s crucial 10-point contribution under the rim.

Sweeping this qualifying window marks a significant turning point for the national program. The three consecutive victories not only inject fresh life into Nigeria’s campaign to secure a spot at the global showpiece but also restore critical locker room confidence following previous competitive setbacks on the continent.

With the opening phase settled in emphatic style, the technical staff and players will pivot to preparation for the second round of the African qualifiers.

The upcoming stage promises far more demanding matchups as the team battles to lock down one of the highly coveted African slots for the 2027 World Cup tournament scheduled to take place in Qatar.
