2027: Atiku Makes Appointment Ahead Of Presidential Election

News Update

Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate for the 2027 election, Atiku Abubakar, has appointed Nollywood actor-turned-politician Kenneth Okonkwo as his spokesperson for the 2027 presidential campaign.

The appointment comes weeks after Okonkwo publicly criticised the selection of Rotimi Amaechi as the ADC’s vice-presidential candidate, arguing that choosing a running mate from the South-South would further deny the South-East an opportunity to occupy the presidency.

He maintained that the South-East had remained excluded from the presidency since 1999 and warned that the development could deepen what he described as the continued marginalisation of the region.

Confirming the appointment to Daily Trust, Atiku’s spokesman, Paul Ibe, said the decision was made by the Waziri Adamawa.

Announcing his appointment on his social media platforms, Okonkwo expressed gratitude to the former vice president for what he described as the confidence reposed in him.

“This appointment speaks volumes of the democratic credentials of HE AA. Rather than pick offence against any of his associates for expressing genuine reservations about any action taken, HE AA always opts for dialogue and compromise that will engender solutions to problems.

“At a dialogue with HE AA and other well-meaning members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), the interests of the South-East were discussed and guaranteed within the existing challenges posed by the Electoral Act, 2026, and the realities on the ground.”

Okonkwo also thanked Kashim Imam for what he described as his intervention and counsel, saying it demonstrated that there is a place for all Nigerians, irrespective of their place of origin, ethnicity, religion, gender, age or cultural affiliation, in the emerging political landscape.

He further expressed appreciation to Ralphs Nwosu for his sacrifices in strengthening the ADC, saying they had helped position the party to confront the challenges facing the coalition.

Okonkwo also acknowledged the efforts of Ekene Onwuka in assembling a formidable campaign team ahead of the 2027 election.

He concluded by thanking his family, friends and supporters for their prayers and encouragement, while seeking continued support as he takes on the new responsibility.
