World Cup 2026: Yirenkyi shines as Ghana make perfect start against Panama

News Update

Ghana’s Black Stars began their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign on a winning note after edging Panama 1-0 in a tense Group L encounter decided by a dramatic stoppage-time goal.

Played under rainy conditions at Toronto Stadium on Wednesday, the contest looked set to end in a frustrating stalemate before Caleb Yirenkyi emerged as the hero for Ghana with a decisive finish deep into added time.

With the clock ticking into the 95th minute, the Black Stars launched a rapid counterattack that caught Panama’s defence off guard. Substitute Brandon Thomas-Asante surged down the left flank and delivered a low cross into the box, where Yirenkyi arrived to calmly tap home and register his first international goal.

The late strike sparked celebrations among Ghanaian supporters and secured all three points in what proved to be a difficult opening test for coach Carlos Queiroz’s side.

Panama created several dangerous moments throughout the game and came close to breaking the deadlock on multiple occasions. Early in the first half, Ghana goalkeeper Benjamin Asare produced an important save to deny Cecilio Waterman from close range.

The pressure continued after the break as Panama pushed forward in search of a breakthrough. Cristian Martínez nearly punished Ghana after creating space inside the area, but his effort found the side netting.

Seeking more attacking energy, Queiroz made a double substitution shortly before the hour mark, introducing Thomas-Asante and Abdul Fatawu — changes that would eventually shape the outcome of the match.

Although Ghana had to withstand sustained pressure for long periods, the Black Stars remained disciplined and patient before delivering the decisive moment at the death.

For Panama, the result was a painful ending after a spirited performance that came close to earning a valuable point. Ghana, meanwhile, will take confidence from the victory as attention now turns to their highly anticipated Group L clash against England on June 23.

The result gives the Black Stars an important early advantage as they continue their push for a place in the knockout rounds.
