THE House of Representatives has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Rep. Yaya Bauchi Tongo, who represented Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency of Gombe State.
In a statement issued on Friday by the House spokesman, Rep. Akintunde Rotimi, the Green Chamber described the late lawmaker’s death as a painful loss to the National Assembly, Gombe State and the nation.
According to the statement, Tongo died in Abuja after a brief illness. His death was confirmed by the Gombe State Caucus in the House of Representatives.
The House said the late legislator lived a life dedicated to public service and the advancement of his constituents and the country.
“His passing marks the end of a distinguished life devoted to public service and the advancement of his constituents, Gombe State and the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the statement said.
The lawmakers noted that Tongo had a long record of public service, having served as Chairman of Funakaye Local Government Area, Special Adviser to the Gombe State Government, and a member of the Gombe State House of Assembly before his election to the House of Representatives.
Until his death, he served as Chairman of the Nigeria–United Arab Emirates Parliamentary Friendship Group in the House.
The statement described him as a seasoned grassroots politician, dedicated legislator and respected parliamentarian whose contributions enriched legislative debates and governance.
“A respected voice within the Parliament and a passionate advocate for the welfare and development of his constituents, Hon. Tongo brought wisdom, experience and a deep understanding of governance to legislative deliberations,” it added.
On behalf of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, the leadership and members of the House, Rotimi extended condolences to the late lawmaker’s family, the people of Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency, and the government and people of Gombe State.
The House prayed for the repose of his soul and asked God to grant his family, constituents and colleagues the strength to bear the loss.
It added that details of parliamentary tributes and funeral arrangements would be announced later.
