Nigeria Premier Football League side Rivers United were involved in a road accident on Thursday while travelling to Awka, Anambra State, for their President’s Cup round of 16 fixture against Nasarawa United.
The incident was reported by club in a statement, noting that the accident occurred along the Obiri-Ikwerre Airport Road on the outskirts of Port Harcourt shortly after the team departed from its camp.
According to the club, some players and officials sustained minor injuries in the accident, but there were no fatalities or life-threatening injuries.
“We wish to inform our supporters, stakeholders and the general public that the team contingent was involved in a road traffic accident on Thursday while travelling to Awka, Anambra State, for the President’s Federation Cup Round of 16 fixture against Nasarawa United.
“The safety, health and well-being of our players and officials remain our utmost priority. We can confirm that some players and officials sustained minor injuries in the accident. Thankfully, there have been no fatalities or life-threatening injuries reported. All affected individuals are currently receiving appropriate medical attention and are in stable condition,” the club said.
Rivers United also appreciated the concern and prayers from supporters and the wider football community, promising to provide further updates on the team’s travel plans and the status of the Federation Cup fixture in due course.
The Port Harcourt-based side booked their place in the round of 16 on Monday after a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Rangers International and were scheduled to face Nasarawa United in Awka on Saturday.
