Aston Villa have won the Europa League with a 3-0 win over Freiburg at the Tüpraş Stadium in Istanbul, Turkey, on Wednesday night.
The English Premier League (EPL) club scored twice in the first half through Youri Tielemans and Emiliano Buendia, while Morgan Rodgers added a third in the second half as Villa overpowered their German opponents and claimed the club’s first major title in 30 years, since a 1996 League Cup win.
The Midlands club, currently fourth in the EPL log, also ended a 44-year wait for a European title and will play in the UEFA Champions League again next season as Europa League winners.
The match was a feisty affair with Freiburg putting on a physical battle to try and subdue their English opponents. Villa, however, remained patient and exploded in the last five minutes of the first half, with Tielemans finding himself on the end of a well-worked corner kick routine, and the Belgian midfielder finished with an unstoppable volley for 1-0.
Buendia got into the act three minutes into added time. The Argentine attacker was afforded too much space on the edge of the penalty area, and he curled expertly into the top far corner for a two-goal lead at the break. Rodgers, the English midfielder, snuck in at the near post to poke Buendia’s low cross into the net to seal the one-sided victory.
Aston Villa maintain their perfect winning record in European finals, and defeat a German opponent in consecutive finals, following up their win over Bayern Munich in 1982 with another over Freiburg.
Unai Emery, Aston Villa coach, also continued his record success in the Europa League with a record-extending fifth title. He also becomes the first coach to win the Europa League with three teams, following three titles with Sevilla and one with Villarreal.
Aston Villa will face either Arsenal or PSG in the UEFA Super Cup at the start of the next European football season on August 12.
