154 Aspirants Jostle for 24 Assembly Seats, 16 Eye APC Governorship Ticket

News update

A sociopolitical organisation, Democratic Network International, has expressed concern over the high number of aspirants seeking elective positions under the platform of the All Progressives Congress in Kwara ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to the group, no fewer than 16 governorship aspirants have purchased expression of interest and nomination forms to contest the APC governorship ticket in the state.

In a statement signed by its coordinator, Israel Babatunde, the organisation described the figure as the highest among the 28 states expected to participate in the forthcoming governorship elections.

The group noted that while states such as Abia, Adamawa, Bauchi, Oyo and Rivers recorded lower numbers of governorship aspirants, Kwara’s unusually large number reflected growing political tension within the ruling party.

The statement described the development as part of the democratic process but warned that it could expose cracks within the party’s leadership structure if not properly managed.

According to the organisation, the APC leadership in the state should have created a framework capable of guiding the process in a more orderly and consensus-driven manner.

The group also claimed that over 40 aspirants had purchased nomination forms for House of Representatives seats, while about 154 aspirants were reportedly vying for 24 seats in the State House of Assembly.

It is estimated that APC aspirants from Kwara may have spent over N3 billion on nomination forms across various elective positions.

The organisation warned that highly competitive primaries could lead to divisions and weaken party cohesion ahead of the elections.

While commending Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for creating an open political environment, the group urged him to emulate Babagana Zulum by working with party stakeholders to build consensus around candidates and prevent post-primary disputes.

The statement also appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the APC national leadership to intervene early to preserve unity within the party in Kwara.

According to the group, proactive engagement by the party leadership could help avert internal disagreements and sustain political stability in the state ahead of the 2027 elections.
