NERC refunds consumers N155m electricity bills

Electricity consumers in no I’m notNigeria received N155.84 million as a credit refund from electricity distribution companies in 2025 alone.

This is according to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission’s latest quarterly data, sighted at the weekend.
The refund followed resolution of billing-related complaints received by NERC across the country.

The data showed that the refunds were issued in tranches to consumers throughout the year after Discos resolved verified overbilling and related disputes.

A breakdown of the refund showed that electricity consumers received N32.21m in the first quarter, N40.22m in the second quarter, N32.66m in the third quarter, and N50.75m in the fourth quarter.

NERC’s showed that billing disputes remained the single largest trigger for customer complaints, accounting for between 29 and 37 percent of total cases recorded in 2025.

Accordingly, in the first quarter alone, the commission received 4,169 complaints, out of which only 1,554 were resolved, translating to a resolution rate of 37.27 percent.

“Customer complaints about billing constituted 37.37 percent of the total complaints received during the quarter, while metering issues accounted for 32.00 percent and service interruptions 13.65 percent, with these three categories cumulatively representing over 83 percent of all complaints,” the NERC report stated.
