President Bola Tinubu has reportedly chosen Lagos Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat, as the preferred candidate for the state’s governorship election.
According to Vanguard, this development has reshaped the political plans of Lagos Assembly Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa who has been nursing a governorship ambition.
The Speaker had been making moves across the state to build support, including reviving the Mandate Group to reconnect with loyalists and expand his political base.
However, Tinubu in consultation with the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), settled for Deputy Governor, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, as the preferred governorship candidate.
After losing out on the governorship path, Obasa redirected his focus to the Lagos West Senatorial District, where he considered contesting for a Senate seat.
He planned to challenge the incumbent senator and former deputy governor, Senator Idiat Adebule.
However, his plan faced a setback from the party’s national leadership and its women’s wing, who insisted that Idiat Adebule, should remain in the race. Party members argued that her position as the only female senator from the South-West made her continued presence important in the National Assembly.
President Tinubu reportedly advised Obasa to pursue a seat in the House of Representatives, Agege Federal Constituency, which is currently represented by Wale Ahmed.
Since then, the Speaker has begun efforts at the grassroots level in Agege, working to gather support for his new political direction.
