Court grants El-Rufai bail

El-Rufai, a former governor of Kaduna State, was brought before the court by prosecutors who accused him of offences linked to his time in public office. The charges, which were formally read in court, are part of an ongoing legal process that has attracted national attention.

At the hearing, his legal team urged the court to grant bail, arguing that he is a well-known public figure who is not a flight risk and is willing to cooperate fully with the trial. They also emphasized his record of public service and assured the court that he would meet any conditions imposed.

The prosecution did not strongly oppose the bail application but asked the court to impose strict conditions to ensure his availability throughout the trial.

In his ruling, the presiding judge granted bail, stating that the defendant is entitled to it under the law, particularly as the charges are not capital offences. The court, however, attached conditions to the bail, which typically include the provision of sureties, submission of travel documents, and an undertaking to appear at all subsequent hearings.

Following the ruling, El-Rufai is expected to perfect his bail conditions before being released from custody.

The court subsequently adjourned the case to a later date for the commencement of trial proceedings. The next hearing is expected to focus on the presentation of evidence by the prosecution and possible witness testimonies.

The development has sparked reactions across political and public circles, with supporters expressing relief over the bail decision, while others say the case should be pursued diligently to ensure accountability.
