Osun 2026: INEC warns against hate speech, lifts ban on public campaigns

News Update

THE Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Osun State has announced that political campaigns for the 2026 governorship election will officially commence on Wednesday, March 11, 2026.

In a press statement issued on Monday by the Commission’s Public Affairs Officer in the state, Musa Olurode, INEC reminded political parties, candidates and their supporters that the campaign period is in line with the timetable and schedule of activities released for the forthcoming election.

The Commission urged political actors to conduct their campaigns peacefully and in strict compliance with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2026 as well as INEC’s regulations and guidelines governing political parties.

INEC particularly warned political parties against engaging in abusive language, hate speech, violence or any act capable of disrupting public peace during the campaign period.

The Commission also encouraged parties and candidates to focus on issue-based campaigns that will enable voters to make informed decisions at the polls.

INEC further appealed to all stakeholders including political parties, candidates, supporters, security agencies, civil society organisations, the media and members of the public to play active roles in ensuring a peaceful political atmosphere across the state.

According to the statement, INEC in Osun State, under the leadership of the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mutiu Agboke, remains committed to collaborating with relevant stakeholders to create a conducive environment for political activities.
