PDP leadership crisis: What the Appeal Court decision means

News Update

THE ruling marks a significant moment in a political and legal battle that has lingered since the disputed PDP national convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State, in November 2025.

In its judgment, the Court of Appeal upheld the earlier decision of the Federal High Court of Nigeria which had restrained the Turaki-led leadership from presenting itself as the legitimate National Working Committee of the party.

The appellate court ruled that the appeal challenging those orders lacked sufficient merit and therefore dismissed it, effectively strengthening the legal position of the faction that had opposed the Ibadan convention.

The crisis began when the PDP held its national convention in Ibadan on November 15–16, 2025, producing a new National Working Committee led by Kabiru Turaki.

However, the outcome was immediately contested by a faction aligned with Nyesom Wike, which argued that the convention violated earlier court directives and internal party agreements.

Members of the Wike-backed camp approached the Federal High Court in Abuja where judges issued interim orders restraining the Turaki leadership from operating as party executives.

Those conflicting rulings—combined with separate orders from courts in Ibadan—created a web of legal uncertainty that eventually landed before the Court of Appeal.

Voice Air Media finds that there are reasons why today’s ruling matters; the decision represents a major legal setback for the Turaki camp and gives fresh momentum to the faction opposed to the Ibadan convention.

Political analysts say the ruling could have several immediate implications:

The judgment weakens the claim of the Turaki-led executive to control the party structure.

The PDP may be forced to consider an interim or caretaker leadership arrangement while the crisis continues.

With the next general elections approaching, the ruling could influence how quickly the opposition party reorganizes itself to remain politically competitive.
