Iran crisis: Nigeria also at risk, warns Baba-Ahmed

Former Special Adviser to Bola Tinubu on Political Matters, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, has warned that Nigeria faces grave risks amid the escalating conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel.

Baba-Ahmed spoke during an interview on Trust TV on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, where he expressed deep concern over the global implications of the crisis.

According to him, the world is now fully aware that the United States and Israel launched coordinated airstrikes against Iran, killing its Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, alongside several senior political and military officials, as well as other citizens.

He said the development signals what appears to be a deliberate move toward regime change in Iran — the removal of its entire leadership structure and the possible installation of a new government.

Baba-Ahmed, however, cautioned that such interventions rarely unfold as neatly as some leaders, including U.S. President Donald Trump, might anticipate. Instead, he warned that the situation could spiral into prolonged chaos within Iran and across the broader region, triggering widespread instability and global repercussions.

“Nigeria too is in trouble and is not safe given these developments,” he stated, stressing that the ripple effects of the conflict could impact economies, security arrangements, and geopolitical alignments worldwide.

CASUALTIES MOUNT IN ESCALATING CONFLICT

The conflict, which intensified into direct military confrontation on February 28, 2026, has resulted in significant casualties.

Initial reports from the Iranian Red Crescent Society indicated at least 555 deaths across 131 cities following the first wave of strikes. Subsequent updates placed the death toll at 787 civilians and military personnel in Iran.

Israeli authorities confirmed 11 fatalities, largely from retaliatory Iranian missile strikes. U.S. forces recorded minimal losses, with three troops reportedly killed in attacks on regional bases.

Iran-backed proxy groups, including Hezbollah and Houthi movement, have also reported dozens of deaths in related clashes spanning Lebanon, Yemen and Syria.

MILITARY ACTIONS AND GLOBAL REACTIONS

Joint U.S.-Israeli airstrikes targeted Iranian nuclear facilities, missile installations and leadership compounds, leading to the confirmed death of Khamenei on February 28.

In response, Iran reportedly launched over 400 ballistic missiles and drones toward Israel, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, with most intercepted by defense systems.

The United States has since deployed additional naval assets to the Persian Gulf and carried out cyber operations aimed at disrupting Iranian communications networks. Israel has mobilised ground forces along its borders and sustained strikes on positions linked to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps.

The United Nations Security Council has convened emergency sessions calling for de-escalation, while Russia and China have offered diplomatic backing to Iran, condemning the strikes as violations of sovereignty.

As of March 3, 2026, ceasefire negotiations remain stalled, with continued bombardments and mounting reports of humanitarian crises in affected Iranian regions.
