Twenty-Five Osun Assembly Lawmakers Dump PDP For Accord

News Update

Twenty five members of the Osun Stateosu Hpouse of Assembly have defected from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to the Accord Party.

The lawmakers, who were elected on the platform of the PDP during the last general election in 2023, announced their decision on Friday after a parliamentary meeting.

Their defection followed that of Governor Ademola Adeleke, who left the PDP in December 2025 and joined the Accord Party ahead of the August 15 governorship election.

In a statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, Olamide Tiamiyu, the legislators said their decision was reached after consultations and internal deliberations.

“After the parliamentary meeting, they proceeded to the Banquet Hall to meet with the governor and top Accord Party leaders, where the formal declaration was officially made by the Speaker,” the statement read.

The Speaker of the House, Adewale Egbedun, was among those who announced the defection alongside the other lawmakers.

According to the statement, the legislators “reaffirmed their unwavering support for the Governor, His Excellency Sen. Ademola Jackson Nurudeen Adeleke, and their commitment to quality representation, transparency and responsive leadership.”

It added that the defecting members urged their supporters and associates “to remain steadfast and join them as they embark on this new political chapter.”

The statement noted that the lawmaker’s decision is to align with the governor’s new party aimed at ensuring continuity in governance and accelerating development across Osun State.

Tiamiyu disclosed that the members had resigned from the PDP weeks earlier, stating that “after deep reflection and extensive consultations with supporters, political associates and key stakeholders, they resolved to align with Accord.”

He added, “The lawmakers are convinced that Accord provides a more stable, inclusive and people-centred platform through which they can continue to serve the people of Osun State.”

With the defection of the 25 members, including the Speaker, the 26-member Assembly is now left with Femi Popoola of the All Progressives Congress, APC, as the only opposition lawmaker in the House.

Also, the political composition of the state legislature has been altered as the Accord Party for the first time in the history of the state is controlling both the state executive and legislature.
