2027: Governor Fintiri switches party

Governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, has formally announced his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressive Congress (APC), describing the move as a strategic decision taken “strictly in the best interest of Adamawa State and its people.”

The announcement, delivered in a statewide broadcast from Yola on Friday, February 27, 2026, comes amid a sweeping political realignment in the state that has seen several high-ranking officials resign from the PDP in recent days.

‘Not Personal, But Strategic’

In his address, Fintiri insisted that the decision was neither driven by personal ambition nor political convenience.
“In 2019, you voted us overwhelmingly against an incumbent. In 2023, you repeated the same feat despite all odds,” he said. “We are conscious of the moral burden imposed on our shoulders by your collective mandate.”
He explained that after extensive consultations across the 21 local government areas and 226 wards, his administration resolved to align Adamawa politically with the APC at the national level under President.

According to him, the alignment would enable the state to better leverage federal partnerships and tap into the Renewed Hope Agenda in key sectors including infrastructure, housing, social welfare and inclusive economic growth.

‘We Are Moving as a Collective’

Fintiri declared that the defection would not be symbolic but structural.
“We are moving into the APC with all our 226 wards, 21 local government areas, all elected and appointed members, and our full political machinery,” he said. “Wherever we go from here, we are going as a collective.”
He called on supporters to register massively with the APC and prepare for what he described as a “guaranteed future” for the state.

Quoting former Senate President, , the governor said: “It takes political sagacity to know political arithmetic,” adding that Adamawa’s new alignment represents “a political geometry that places every number in its rightful position.”

‘Back to Mainstream Politics’

The governor described the development as the end of what he termed “sideline politics” for Adamawa State.
“This means Adamawa is back to mainstream politics, politics that will benefit our state more than ever before. It means more opportunities and greater stake for our people at the national level,” he said.

He assured citizens that his administration would continue its focus on security, infrastructure, healthcare, education, youth and women empowerment, scholarships, and social welfare programmes.
“This is more than a promise. It is a sacred covenant,” Fintiri declared. “It is a bold walk into a guaranteed future for Adamawa State.”

Wave of Resignations Precedes Governor’s Exit

The political tremor began earlier with the resignation of a serving senator from Southern Adamawa, a development that sent shockwaves across the state’s political structure. Shortly after, the Speaker of the Adamawa State House of Assembly and 14 other members of the Assembly also stepped down from the PDP, signalling what many observers described as a coordinated political shift.

The resignations fueled widespread speculation about an impending major defection, speculation that was confirmed by Governor Fintiri’s broadcast.

Political analysts say the sequence of exits underscores the scale and organisation behind the realignment, suggesting that the governor’s move was part of a broader strategic repositioning rather than an isolated decision.

With the governor, a senator, the Speaker and 14 lawmakers exiting the PDP within days, Adamawa’s political landscape has been dramatically reshaped, setting the stage for a new power configuration in the state ahead of future electoral contests.
