15 state lawmakers including speaker resign from PDP in Adamawa

News Update

Fresh political tremors have hit Adamawa State as the Speaker of the Adamawa State House of Assembly, Wesley Bathiya, has led 14 other lawmakers to resign from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), deepening speculations over Governor Umaru Fintiri’s imminent defection.

The mass resignation comes amid mounting reports that Governor Fintiri is finalising plans to leave the PDP for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), in what observers describe as a strategic realignment ahead of 2027.

The coordinated move by the Speaker and the lawmakers signals what insiders say is a pre-emptive consolidation of political structures to smoothen the governor’s anticipated transition.

Last week, Media exclusively reported that the APC had shelved its planned state congresses in Adamawa to accommodate Governor Fintiri and his political structure.

The move was widely interpreted as a concession to ease his entry into the ruling party without internal resistance.

The shelving of the congresses had sparked murmurs within APC ranks, with party loyalists questioning whether internal democratic processes were being sacrificed to pave the way for a high-profile defection.

With the Speaker and a majority bloc in the 25-member House now formally cutting ties with the PDP, the balance of power in the Assembly appears to have tilted decisively.

Following the latest resignations, the House is effectively now an APC-dominated chamber.

Only the member representing Lamurde Constituency, Build Bauna is yet to be clearly accounted for in the unfolding political shift.

The lawmaker was neither heard from nor visibly recorded during plenary proceedings where the mass resignations were announced, raising questions about his political stance amid the sweeping defections.

Political watchers say the development amounts to a near-total collapse of the PDP structure within the State Assembly, reinforcing signals that the governor’s anticipated move may be all but sealed.

Attempts to get official confirmation from the governor’s camp were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.

However, sources within both camps insist the unfolding events are part of a carefully coordinated political recalibration that could redefine Adamawa’s power dynamics in the months ahead.
