News Update
Diplomatic relations between the United States and several European countries have come under fresh strain following President Donald Trump’s decision to impose new trade tariffs linked to his push to acquire Greenland.
Beginning from February 1, 2026, goods exported to the United States from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Finland will attract a 10 per cent import tariff.
Trump stated that the levy would be increased to 25 per cent by June 1 if discussions fail to produce what he described as a full agreement for the transfer of Greenland to U.S. ownership.
The U.S. President announced the decision on January 17 via his Truth Social account, noting that the tariffs would remain in effect until an agreement is reached.
He has consistently maintained that Greenland’s strategic Arctic location and vast mineral resources make it critical to U.S. national security interests.
Trump further warned that rival global powers, including China and Russia, could seek greater influence in the region if the United States does not assert itself.
Across Europe, the announcement has triggered widespread protests, with demonstrators in Copenhagen and Greenland’s capital, Nuuk, rejecting any attempt to sell the territory.
European leaders have also pushed back strongly, insisting that Greenland’s future lies solely in the hands of its people. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenlandic officials reaffirmed the island’s ties to Denmark and NATO.
Economic analysts have cautioned that the tariff move could disrupt trade flows and further complicate already sensitive relations between long-standing allies.
Within the United States, opinions remain divided, as some lawmakers have criticised the policy.
A bipartisan delegation recently visited Denmark and Greenland to reassure partners and stress respect for Greenland’s autonomy.
