2027: I’ll not step down, Atiku vows

News Update

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has spoken out on the growing debate around the 2027 presidential race under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), making it clear that no aspirant will be pressured to step aside.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Atiku’s media adviser, Paul Ibe, said every qualified contender was free to pursue their ambition within the party.

Atiku’s clarification comes amid speculation that he is under pressure to step down in favour of a Southern candidate.

The former vice president dismissed such claims, saying they were politically motivated and harmful to democratic principles.

Instead, he argued that President Bola Tinubu, whose leadership he described as a burden to the country, should be the one to step aside.

Atiku also accused the APC of attempting to interfere in the internal affairs of the ADC, particularly concerning its choice of a presidential candidate.

He claimed that agents aligned with the presidency were trying to destabilise the party from the outside, issuing “reckless prescriptions” about its internal affairs.

Meanwhile, Dele Momodu, a chieftain of the ADC, has warned against a repeat of the “Nyesom Wike scenario” in the party, cautioning against allowing individuals or groups to destabilize the platform. Momodu’s warning comes amid mounting pressure from supporters and allies of former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, who are demanding that the ADC hand him its 2027 presidential ticket.

The ADC’s internal dynamics have become a subject of interest, with various groups and individuals vying for position and influence within the party.

While some are pushing for Obi’s candidacy, others are backing Atiku’s ambition.

The party’s leadership will need to navigate these competing interests and ensure a fair and democratic process in selecting its presidential candidate.

In the midst of these developments, Atiku remains resolute in his pursuit of the presidency, emphasizing that the ADC is on a national rescue mission and that he is central to this effort.
