11 months after Osun LG workers resume duties

After an 11-month sit-at-home directive, local government workers across Osun State resumed work, on Monday.

The presence of heavily armed policemen were sighted at the local government Secretariats in aligning with the assurance given by the Commissioner of Police, Osun State Police Command, Ibrahim Gotan.

At the Ede North local government council secretariat, the Executive Chairman of Ede North local government council area, Elliot Adeyemi, said the resumption of workers after a 10-month sit-at-home would enhance development across the state.

Adeyemi, who made this known an interview in Ede, said the decision by workers to return to duty was in the overall interest of the people.

He said that the presence of workers at their duty posts would improved service delivery and help address grassroots challenges in communities across the state.

According to him, “effective governance at the local government level depends largely on the commitment and availability of public servants to implement policies and programmes that directly impact the people.

“I have been at work since feb. 10 and it is out workers that resumes work after some months of staying back from work.

“The atmosphere of the local government is calm and no body sent the workers away from work before now and when they felt it is time for them to resume , they came back to work,” Adeyemi said.

He called for the collaboration of all workers, noting that the synergy would continue among workers for meaningful growth and development at the grassroot level.

Adeyemi welcomed all workers and added that all hands must be on deck to ensure effective service delivery to the people.

Also, the Executive Chairman of Olorunda local government council area, Kunle Kudayisi has expressed satisfaction at the turn up of local government workers as they resume back to work after an eleven month strike.

Kudayisi who is the All Progressives Congress, APC, elected chairman for the council, stated this while responding to questions from journalists on Monday at the council secretariat, Igbona.

Kudayisi also called on other staff of the council who are yet to resume to do so as they are assured of peaceful atmosphere to do their job.

He said, “In the last ten to eleven months we have been begging and asking the local government staff to resume work

“We are all from this state and we are all working for the progress of the state. I am too sure that Osun State will move forward.

“We have been backwards in the last eleven months. What we are going to do now, we hardly can cover up with other states.

“We are happy that they are around. No fight, no rancour.”

On security he said, “so far so good, you can see things by yourself that what we heard over the weekend has been thwarted.

“The area is calm and everybody is going peacefully. We have security and we are heavily guarded. We are thinking perhaps there is going to be problem but there is no rancour and we have a free atmosphere to operate.”

He called for cooperation from the local government workers to move the state and local government forward

Correspondent observed at the secretariat that many staff of the local government were seen milling around as most offices were yet to be opened up for business.

The Osun State Chapter of the National Union of Local Government Employees, NULGE, had last week announced that its members would resume to work on Monday, January 5, 2026.

The resumption to work is coming after nearly an eleven months strike embarked upon by the union of Monday, February 17, 2025.

The strike was necessitated after violence broke out across Osun local government secretariats for the control of the councils.

In the ensuing violence, Remi Abass, a member of the APC in Irewole local government council area lost his life.
