NHS urged to drop case against nurse over calling transgender Paedophile ‘Mr’ remark

The UK  Conservative Party has urged the NHS to drop its disciplinary action against an NHS nurse who was suspended for calling a transgender paedophile ‘Mr’.Jennifer Melle, 40, was previously investigated and disciplined by Trust bosses despite being called the n-word by the patient.

She has since been escorted from and suspended by St Helier Hospital in Carshalton, Surrey, after speaking to journalists about her ordeal. According to Mail Online, Shadow women and Equalities Minister, Claire Countinho has today written to the NHS Trust to demand that no disciplinary action is taken against the nurse.

She said that Ms Melle is due to face a hearing next week, where she will be informed of the action against her, which could mean she loses her job.The dispute began last May after the senior nurse had been discussing using a catheter on her patient, a paedophile who was serving time at a high-security men’s prison.

The patient took issue with her use of the word ‘Mr’, prompting the nurse to explain, ‘sorry, I cannot refer to you as ‘her’ or ‘she’, as it’s against my faith and Christian values, but I can call you by your name.’

The patient then subjected her to a racially and religiously aggravated assault, flew into a rage, and used the n-word three times.

Ms Melle was investigated and disciplined by the hospital later that year and referred to the Nursing and Midwifery Council which states that nurses should not express their personal beliefs. She has since filed a legal claim against the Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals Trust for harassment, discrimination and human rights breaches.

She told the Mail on Sunday, who broke the story, at the time: ‘I am devastated to have been suspended just for whistleblowing.

‘Despite being the one placed at risk, I am the one being punished. The message I have received is clear: I am expected to tolerate racism, deny biological reality, and suppress my deeply held Christian beliefs.’

Writing to Trust managers in support of Ms Melle yesterday, Ms Countinho said: ‘Ultimately, this is about a nurse who has given over a decade of service to the NHS and who, through no fault of her own, was subjected to racial abuse at work by a transgender convicted paedophile.

‘She was then abandoned by the institutions that were supposed to protect her, but which have instead surrendered to the influence of radical gender ideology.‘Taking disciplinary action against Jennifer Melle is a grave injustice. If sanctions are imposed it will cause severe damage to the Trust’s reputation with the public, who can clearly see that Jennifer has done nothing wrong.’

She said that the mention of ‘dismissal’ was particularly distressing to Ms Melle who as a single mother would struggle to find a new nursing job while the investigation is ongoing. She also added that the nurse had been left in a position where she had to speak to the media to highlight the injustice given her position was supported by the Supreme Court ruling on gender.

The Tory MP added: ‘I urge you to intervene and ensure that no disciplinary action is taken against Jennifer Melle.’
