A tragic accident occurred on Friday night in Ogun State when a Dangote Cement truck slammed into a tricycle, killing all five occupants instantly.
The fatal crash took place around 8:30 p.m. at the Alapoka axis of the Papalanto–Ilaro Road in Yewa South Local Government Area.
According to Babatunde Akinbiyi, spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), the collision involved an unregistered tricycle and a Dangote truck (registration GRZ 767 XA).
Preliminary investigation suggests the cause of the disaster was brake failure on the part of the truck.
“A fatal road traffic accident occurred at Alapoka Village, Papalanto–Ilaro Road, Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State on Friday at 8:25 p.m. The tricycle was conveying five people, and sadly, all five died on the spot,” Akinbiyi said.
According to an eyewitness account, the truck driver remained unaware of the crash until the tricycle and all its passengers had been crushed beneath the vehicle’s tyres.
Upon receiving the news, TRACE officials, led by Acting Head Adedayo Omonayajo and Ilaro Divisional Commander Salako Idowu, launched a rescue effort.
The operation was briefly complicated by hostile, angry residents before the intervention of the Amotekun Corps finally calmed the scene.
“The presumed dead were taken to the morgue by Federal Road Safety Corps officials,” Akinbiyi said.
