News Update
THE governments of Lagos, Oyo, and Ogun states have declared Wednesday, August 20, 2025, as a public holiday to mark this year’s Isese Day celebration.
The holiday was announced separately by the governors of the three states, who explained that the day was set aside to honour the culture, traditions, and spiritual heritage of the Yoruba people.
In Lagos, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu approved the holiday through a circular from the Head of Service.
The notice directed that all government offices should close on Wednesday and reopen on Thursday, August 21, by 8 a.m.
The directive was addressed to senior officials, including the deputy governor, lawmakers, commissioners, and local government leaders, with instructions that the information be circulated widely.
In Oyo, Governor Seyi Makinde also granted approval for the work-free day, with the state government urging residents to use the celebration as a period of reflection and prayers for peace and unity in the state and across Nigeria.
The announcement was made in a statement by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Olanike Adeyemo, in Ibadan.
Similarly, the Ogun State Government confirmed August 20 as a public holiday, noting that the day offers an opportunity for adherents of Yoruba traditional religion to honour their ancestors, observe rituals, and promote values rooted in indigenous beliefs.
The state added that the recognition of Isese Day reflects the importance of cultural heritage to the identity of the people.
Osun State is also expected to follow suit by declaring a similar holiday for the celebration.
