Kwam 1 Bags Government’s Ambassadorship Days After Airport Fracas

News Update

Just days after a mid-flight confrontation saw him removed from a ValueJet aircraft, Fuji star Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, widely known as Kwam 1, has been named the Federal Government’s new ambassador for airport security protocol.

Voice Air Media reports that the appointment was announced on Wednesday by Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development Festus Keyamo.

The appointment forms part of a broader government effort to address unruly passenger behaviour and improve public awareness of aviation rules. It comes in the wake of two incidents, Kwam 1’s August 5 clash with airport officials and the separate case of passenger Comfort Emmanson.

According to Keyamo, the controversies, while “regrettable,” have helped spotlight proper conduct at airports and on flights. “Valuable lessons have been learnt by all sides… and public awareness about airport security protocol has been well highlighted,” he said.

The ValueJet incident that sparked public debate began when Kwam 1 allegedly refused to surrender a flask suspected of containing alcohol, insisting it held prescribed medication. The refusal prompted the flight crew to deboard him, with officials accusing him of attempting to delay takeoff, an act considered a breach of aviation safety rules.

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) had initially petitioned Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun over the matter, but after a review, reduced the singer’s flight ban to one month, dropped its criminal complaint, and confirmed his engagement with the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) on security protocol campaigns. Two ValueJet pilots involved in the episode were also suspended for one month.
