Osun: APC, State Govt Clash Over Governor Adeleke Two-week Absence

News Update

THE All Progressives Congress, APC, in Osun State has accused Governor Ademola Adeleke of abandoning his post and leaving the country for over two weeks without informing the public or formally handing over power to his deputy, Kola Adewusi.

The APC, in a statement signed by its spokesperson, Kola Olabisi on Tuesday in Osogbo, described the governor’s prolonged silence and unannounced departure as abnormal.

The party also raised concerns about the leadership vacuum in the state.

“It is wrong for Governor Adeleke to disappear without notifying the citizens or the legislature. We need to know who has been running Osun in his absence,” the party said.

The party, which alleged that the governor had been absent since his failed attempt to defect to the opposition APC, described the development as suspicious and lacking transparency.

“Did the governor duly transmit power to his deputy, who is constitutionally covered to temporarily step into his principal’s shoes?” the APC queried.

The statement added that questions about Adeleke’s whereabouts had become widespread in public places, motor parks, and commercial buses across the state.

Responding swiftly, Governor Adeleke’s spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, confirmed that the governor had travelled to the United States to attend the wedding of his nephew, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido.

Rasheed also in a statement on Tuesday, dismissed the APC’s statement as political mischief.

Governor Adeleke’s spokesperson revealed that the governor had not taken a formal vacation since assuming office in November 2022.

“Governor Adeleke left Nigeria for the United States via the family’s private jet a few days ago for the wedding of the global music icon, his beloved nephew, David Adeleke,” Rasheed said.

He also extended an invitation to the APC to attend the wedding celebration or join virtually.

“His Excellency is inviting the opposition party to share in the joy of the Adeleke family.”

Rasheed assured the public that the governor remains in constant contact with his deputy, Prince Kola Adewusi, who is supervising government activities during his absence.

“The governor has again chosen to make this trip a short one so that he can return promptly to attend to crucial state functions,” Rasheed added.
